Night cycling: an essential guide to riding out at night safely and in style
There's something magical about cycling at night: the empty roads, the silence, the feeling of riding in your own universe. But to ensure that magic doesn't turn into an unexpected problem, it's important to keep a few key details in mind. Dog Days has put together a practical guide to help you enjoy night cycling, whether you're riding solo or in a group like our "Turnedo" event.
1. Lights: your best ally (and your obligation)
- Front: Use a powerful light (minimum 500 lumens for the road, better 800+ if you are going through areas without streetlights).
- Rear lights: always on, either steady or flashing. Avoid lights that dazzle other drivers.
- Battery: Charge them before leaving and, if the route is long, bring an external battery or spare light.
2. Visible and reflective clothing
It's not enough for you to see: others need to see you. Opt for light-colored clothing, reflective elements, and fluorescent details. Some brands like Pas Normal Studios, MAAP, and Sweet Protection already incorporate discreet yet effective reflective elements.
3. Plan your route wisely
- Avoid technical areas, sections without coverage, or unfamiliar roads.
- Ideally: asphalt, wide tracks or well-lit bike lanes.
- Keep an eye on the temperature, especially in summer: it can drop significantly at night.
4. Navigation and communication
A good GPS will save you from unpleasant surprises and unnecessary detours. Make sure it's fully charged, has the track loaded, and has offline maps if possible. Use Strava, Komoot, or RideWithGPS to plan your trip in advance.
Always share your real-time location with someone you trust. Make sure your phone has enough battery.
5. Warn, respect, and anticipate
- Warn the group of any obstacles or changes in pace.
- Avoid excessively long shifts or sudden accelerations.
- Respect the silence in urban areas if you pass through them.
6. Additional technical material
- Glasses with clear or photochromic lenses
- Tool kit and spare parts (and knowing how to use it)
- Canister with drink and some easily digestible food
In summary
Night cycling is an amazing experience if done with common sense and good equipment. At Dog Days, we encourage you to try it with us in Turnedo , a different and special ride with all the community spirit that defines us.
You can cycle at night too.
