Cómo transportar tu bici en coche correctamente

How to transport your bike correctly in a car

Whether for a ride or a trip, transporting your bike correctly prevents damage and fines. We'll tell you about the safest and legal options.

How to transport your bike in a car without damaging it

Planning a route away from home or a cycling trip involves one basic thing: transporting your bike safely . Improper transport can cause damage to the frame, components, or even fines for violating regulations. Here's how to do it right.

1. Roof-mounted bike rack

The most common and economical option. The bike is secured by its wheels or frame, freeing up trunk space. However, this does increase the vehicle's height: be mindful of parking and tolls.

  • Advantages: economical, compatible with most cars, does not limit rear visibility.
  • Disadvantages: higher fuel consumption, more noise, and risk of collisions if you forget the height.

2. Ball or platform bike rack

The most stable and comfortable option if you travel frequently. It secures the bike by the wheels, not the frame, and better protects the carbon fiber. Ideal for high-end bikes.

  • Advantages: maximum security, easy access, effortless bike loading.
  • Disadvantages: It requires a tow ball and is more expensive.

3. Rear hatch or trunk

A temporary solution, useful if you only make occasional trips. But watch out for chafing: use foam padding or cloths and make sure the straps are properly tightened.

4. Inside the car

Perfect for short trips or if you have a large vehicle. Remove the wheels and place the bike on a blanket or protector. Secure it with straps to prevent movement when turning or braking.

5. Care before and after transport

  • Clean the bike before loading it: dust and grease can damage the paint if they rub against it.
  • Protect the frame with covers or foam in contact areas.
  • Avoid holding it by the top tube if it's carbon: better to hold it by the wheels or the seat post.
  • Remove delicate accessories: cycle computer, lights or jerrycans.

6. Legality and security

Remember that bikes cannot obstruct the license plate or lights. If you use a rear bike rack, add a V-20 warning sign and make sure it doesn't protrude beyond the permitted area.

Dog Days recommends

If you're transporting high-value bikes or bikes with carbon frames, invest in a platform bike rack or use specific covers. And upon arrival, always check the locks, wheels, and axles before riding.

Your bike goes everywhere with you. Take care of it on the road too.
