3 common mistakes when washing your bike (and how to avoid them)
A clean bike doesn't just look better: it lasts longer and performs better . But washing it incorrectly can do the exact opposite. These are the most common mistakes we see in the workshop and how to avoid them.
1. Using pressurized water directly on bearings
Powerful pressure washers or hoses can force water and grease out of the bottom bracket bearings, hubs, or headset. Use medium pressure and aim from a distance.
2. Do not degrease before washing
If you clean the frame before removing the grease, you'll just spread it around. Apply degreaser to the drivetrain and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
3. Do not dry or lubricate afterwards
Wastewater corrodes screws, the chain, and other components. Dry with a clean cloth and apply lubricant to the chain before storing the bike.
Extra tip: avoid household products like Fairy or ammonia. Use specific cleaners and you'll see the difference.
