Cycling clothing layers: what to wear in summer and winter

Dressing well on your bike isn't just about fashion; it's about performance, safety, and comfort. It's not about wearing a lot or a little, but about choosing the right layers for each season, type of ride, and terrain.

At Dog Days, we work with technical brands like Pas Normal Studios, MAAP, Tactic, Gsport, and Etxeondo , who not only design well but also consider the real cyclist. This guide will help you dress better, whether you're riding on the road or gravel, in summer or winter.

Summer

Objective: breathability, sun protection and comfort.

  • Lightweight technical jersey: breathable and quick-drying fabrics.
  • Mesh undershirt: only use it if you sweat a lot or there are temperature changes (ideal for long rides or mountain passes).
  • Cycling shorts with a good chamois: with bib straps and adapted to the duration of your rides.
  • Lightweight windproof vest: highly recommended for the early hours of the day or after a climb. If you've just finished a sweaty ascent, put it on before descending to avoid getting cold quickly.
  • Accessories:
    • Thin arm warmers if you go out early or there are long descents.
    • Photochromic glasses or glasses with a solar filter.
    • Technical socks and sunscreen (always).

Winter

Objective: insulation, breathability and protection against the cold and wind.

  • Thermal base layer: essential. Helps wick away sweat without losing heat.
  • Mesh shirt: also useful in winter if you're doing intense exercise. Wear it under your base layer if you tend to sweat a lot.
  • Mid-layer: thermal jersey or jacket depending on the temperature.
  • Outer layer: waterproof or windproof jacket with ventilation. Ideal if it rains or for long descents.
  • Thermal long cycling shorts: with wind protection in sensitive areas.
  • Accessories:
    • Long thermal gloves.
    • Neck and face buff or scarf.
    • Thin hat under the helmet.
    • Merino wool socks or similar.
    • Overshoes or winter boots.

Tips based on terrain and pace

  • Climbing mountain passes: if you're wearing a mesh shirt, make sure it's properly ventilated. Once you reach the summit, put it on if you had it off, or add a vest before descending.
  • On long descents: put on your vest before you get cold. Even if you're sweaty, it's better to prevent a sudden drop in temperature.
  • If it's hot: take off your vest quickly after the descent to avoid overheating.

Dog Days Council

Dress as if you're going to be cold for the first 10 minutes: if you're bundled up from the start, you'll probably have too many clothes as soon as you get into a rhythm.

At Dog Days, we have everything you need to get kitted out all year round. If you're unsure what to wear or what you need for your sport and routes, stop by the store or send us a message on WhatsApp . We'll advise you and help you combine functionality with style.
